ASTM D4018 Tensile Testing Composite Tows using Automatic Extensometry
Composite tow specimens can prove to be difficult to test due to their geometry and delicate nature. Properties such as tensile strength and modulus are determined by loading specimens to failure. As in many mechanical testing scenarios, measuring strain accurately is vital to ensuring correct results.
The AutoX 750 provided accurate data while maintaining the repeatability needed when testing composite tows. Compared to using a static clip-on extensometer, using an AutoX 750 extensometer helped increase throughput and reduce operator influence in the testing process. The increased consistency makes the AutoX 750 ideal for testing composite tow specimens.
We recommend reading and reviewing ASTM D4018 in order to fully understand the test requirements.
The AutoX 750 is a high-resolution, long-travel automatic contacting extensometer. It can be mounted onto any electromechanical 3300, 5500, or 5900 table top and floor model systems, as well as LX, DX, HDX, and KN static hydraulic testing systems. It is well suited for applications involving plastics, metals, biomedical, composites, elastomers, and more. The AutoX has a maximum travel of 750 mm and accuracy of ± 1 µm.
